TR2 and RT3: tirzepatide, retatrutide and GLP-3 explained

Decode TR2, RT3 and GLP-3 in plain English. Learn why tirzepatide has two receptor targets, retatrutide has three, and GLP-2 means something different.

TR2 often refers to tirzepatide. RT3 often refers to retatrutide. “GLP-3” is an informal nickname for retatrutide; GLP-2 is a different hormone. Seller codes are not standardized, so confirm the full compound name and matching batch report.

The quick name decoder

  • TR2 / tirzepatide: one compound with two receptor targets: GIP and GLP-1.
  • RT3 / retatrutide: one compound with three receptor targets: GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon.
  • GLP-2: a separate hormone, not a shorthand scientific name for tirzepatide.
  • “GLP-3”: informal language, not a scientific classification or proof of what is in a vial.

The receptor explanations below link to Lilly and the official medicine label. A seller nickname and a scientific name are different kinds of information.

What do JD-2TR and JD-3RT mean?

JD BioWorks uses these catalog codes. Its COA library lists tirzepatide identity results for JD-2TR samples and retatrutide identity results for JD-3RT samples. Those are the library’s reported results, not our independent laboratory verification. A code alone cannot verify a different batch. Our compound pages list tirzepatide / JD-2TR and retatrutide / JD-3RT.

What does agonist mean?

A receptor is like a message receiver on a cell. An agonist activates it. “Dual” means two receptor targets; “triple” means three. This does not mean two or three ingredients, doses, or milligrams.

Tirzepatide has two targets

They are called GIP and GLP-1. That is why tirzepatide is called a dual agonist. Lilly’s explanation names both. Two targets does not rename it GLP-2.

Retatrutide has three targets

They are GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon. Retatrutide is one compound with three targets. Lilly’s retatrutide guide explains this.

So what are “GLP-2” and “GLP-3”?

GLP-2 is a real, different hormone—not the correct name for tirzepatide. The teduglutide label describes a medicine acting on GLP-2.

“GLP-3” is an informal nickname sometimes used for retatrutide. It is not the scientific name for its three-target action. JD BioWorks’ names article explains the confusion.

The quick check

Find the actual compound name, then match the vial’s batch to its COA. The name does not establish a dose or make a research vial equivalent to a medicine. Next: dose and weekly totals or the beginner dictionary.
